The French of England II: Texts and Manuscripts

Meetings are Tuesdays 5.30-7.30 with practicum 4.30-5.30

There will be three strands in this intensive course of three hours per week (i) a linguistic practicum with grammatical study, exercises and quizzes; (ii) an intensive study of Matthew Paris’s Estoire de seint Aedward le rei from manuscript to transcription to edition to literary-historical study, using both the digitized MS on the web and the ANTS edition of this text; and (iii) each student will be supplied via microfilm or other media (plus, in the case of accessible MSS in USA repositories, a manuscript trip), and will each work on and present as their course project a mini-edition of their chosen prologue, a transcription, edition, translation, annotation, glossary, bibliography and brief literary-historical contextualizing essay.
